History
“Age is an issue of mind over matter, if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter”
Mark Twain
I am 62 years old and there now 6 generations of my family who have lived in Trumansburg. Most of them community servants in one way or another.
My great grandfather Irwin Potter was a welfare officer and farmer (the former farm is now the Trumansburg Golf Club). My grandfather Francis Potter was town highway superintendent for many years and my father Carl Potter was a Rotarian, Community Council President, and village trustee.
My mother Sylvia was village clerk for 12 years.
My parents had a business in the village owning Cayuga Cleaners (located where our post office is now). I was in business running Vine Garden Designs flower shop from 2007-2014.I live on Halsey Street, the street I grew up on in my grandparent’s house with my husband Dan (who is your friendly postal clerk in town). My father lived on Halsey Street his entire life of 84 years and never moved.
I have an incredible love for this community and Mayberry memories of swimming in the “crick,” riding my bike all over town on dirt roads before they became paved, you knew everyone by name and neighbors were family.
The heart of Trumansburg has not changed much and I think we have changed for the good. Minds are more open, acceptance is easier, I think. The only thing trying to chip away at it is social media. This is why I encourage people to get off their computers and get out where the people are. You care more about people you get to know. If you have questions or hear a rumor, ask the source.
Everyone on the board is committed to doing their best for this community. They are empathic, people who have families and do not deserve a bully mentality on line.Nobody’s mental health should suffer over something like that. Yes, it affects adults as well as children.
