Community Involvement

“Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means do not do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived”

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

As my boys grew up I was very involved in school activities and the baseball program. During the summer months I did fundraising and concessions for Trumansburg Travel Baseball.

In the past, I held the position of president for the Ulysses Community Council. This organization was comprised of local village and town youth representatives as well as not for profit organizations. Trumansburg Christmas Bureau, Trumansburg Community Nursery School, Village Summer Recreation and Food Pantry.

I worked closely with United Way to distribute needed monies. I spearheaded fundraising activities with residents and business owners initiating one of the first backpack programs for school children.

Upon its inception in 2010 I volunteered for a new, local non-profit T-burg Takes on Pediatric Cancer”. This organization is completely volunteer and its board members are not compensated in any way other than the grace they receive by helping families whose children are undergoing lifesaving cancer treatment. They help local families, personally deliver checks, and visit family members.

I am proud to say my son and daughter-in-law now serve on this board and last year assisted in raising over $81,000 for families helping with bills, lodging, gas cards and gifts.

Trumansburg takes great pride in its community. Over the years small initiatives have generated a greater interest in recycling, food scrap composting, alternative fuel sources and the reuse of building materials rather than sending them to a landfill.

As a floral shop business owner I participated in the county’s composting program. All of my organic matter, dead flowers, stems and greenery were picked up and sent for composting every week. If we all do just a little bit personally it can make a big difference.

Last year, along with my board member colleagues, I participated in Earth Day clean up. Each individual or group was designated an area of town to pick up trash. It was really well organized. Bags, gloves, garbage poles and maps were provided.
