When I first came onto the board appointed by the mayor, I was not sure how well received I would be. There is a significant age difference between myself and those of my colleagues but I also felt there was an unrepresented demographic lacking; representation from an older generation and a woman.
Now, I am not of the mindset that someone should be elected just based on gender, age etc. to simply fill a balance requirement. They most certainly should have interest, done homework, attended board meetings, have made the effort of community involvement.
I was so impressed with the amount of work hours my colleagues put into their positions. The water and sewer initiative, upgrades, fee adjustment, meter upgrades were an astronomical amount of work. It was also a catch-up issue that was not given enough attention from prior boards and an issue kicked down the road for far too long.
Our zoning regulations have been out of date for years and years. As a citizen I attended the initial comprehensive plan workshops. It has taken several years of public input and feedback to get to the final draft of the residential zoning law which the board recently passed.
Though it may have been unpopular with some, I concluded that it was a good compromise giving more allowance to offer the opportunity for parents to age in place or provide living quarters for disabled family members. Additionally, it would still protect privacy, allow flexibility, without squishing our village into small, small lots that lack breathing room.
The county determined we were not aggressive enough in our planning pushing for more density but I think we need to do what is best for our community.
Emergency Medical Services is paramount to a healthy community. I wish our legislators understood that EMS is first hand critical medical
treatment. We get no funding for our 24/7 EMS; it is all paid for by the taxpayer. It costs well over a million to run this service with qualified personnel and equipment. This cost will never go down and it will rise annually. Finding a way to sustain this operation is very challenging.
Every aspect of village government has changed over my 62 years as a resident. The office of mayor and trustee is very involved and while years ago it may have been a matter of shaking hands and kissing babies, it is now constant communication with those above us to get the knowledge we need to lead us in a direction of sustainability for all our services and resources we treasure.
I have also been honored to work with this fine group of men; Ben Darfler, Keith Hannon, Deputy Mayor Ben Carver, and Mayor Rordan Hart. They are intelligent, thoughtful and care deeply about this place in which we live.
It is also deeply important to me that no matter where you reside in the village, it is my goal to be fiscally responsible so everyone who lives here and wants to stay here, can enjoy this community and the wonderful quality of life we are offered here.
I thank you for visiting my website and hope you will re-elect me to serve as a board trustee for another 4 years.
